With some frequency I like to watch movies that many would probably not choose to see because they are boring. If that were the case, directors and companies wouldn't bother producing them, knowing they wouldn't go far. As I watch them, I try to see where is the value that they, their director and cast saw in finishing this product. What could I see of value in the case of The Humans (2021)?
PREVIEW
It all takes place the night a couple receives her family in their apartment in New York. Although it has several rooms and levels, the place has narrow corridors and "cramped" places where even getting a wheelchair through is a problem. The environment is decorated with walls whose paint has already been paled by time, disuse and a strong omnipresent humidity. Some spaces lack windows, and therefore depend on poor artificial lighting that diminishes as the minutes go by.
But the strong point is not the scenery, it is the people. Names and faces that we have already seen on the big screen and the small screen make us interested in what will happen in this peculiar night between people united by blood ties but it seems that emotionally they are on different continents. Moving forward, it seems that the main course will not be what they will eat, but what some of them have planned to reveal when they sit down to eat. What is each one looking for in that night? What do they expect from each other? Is there something external to them that conspires against their good coexistence?
The way it's done will seek to play with your mind, which may result in the riskiest strategy for acceptance and recommendation. It may strike skeptical minds with long hours of exposure to the seventh art as predictable and slow, with unnecessary details and sequences. If you look at the technical stuff, you'll probably find it distracting and appreciate how well-curated the cinematography is. And perhaps the faces you see will hold your interest to keep you sitting through the more difficult stretches.
THE CHARACTERS
I like that each character takes the time to tell you where they come from, what their background is, what's bothering them that night, and a little more about their temperament and opinion of others at home. They do this almost imperceptibly and naturally. The symmetrical composition, the tight shots and plenty of space occupied in the framing are part of the resources chosen to show you who you should think about, who they are talking about, who you should connect with in that part of the story. Even the wheelchair-bound grandmother who has delusions and sudden mood swings will also have scenes that surprise you and demand your attention.
I think the physical traits that each actor and actress has match very well with the character they are playing. The casting can even show some physical commonalities between them, stereotypes that some agree exist in some relationships, and the temper and character that each character in the story imposes.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
In my opinion, one of the highest marks this product has is the quality of the performances. Even Amy Schumer (Aimee) is in keeping with a character who is going through a difficult year physically, emotionally and financially. All in all, the sarcastic humor comes out in some scenes just as the comedy greats know how to do in complicated scenarios. The interaction between them is very good. They are supposed to be a family and there should be the trust between them to say and do what is considered normal. And they absolutely pull it off, of course they do. Even, the interruptions in the dialogue make it look very everyday, making you buy the idea that they really are family.
The simplicity of word choice in the dialogue and the common themes that run through the family is also a wise idea. It is possible that some viewer will empathize with one of the characters who finds themselves in a similar situation. I'm not sure if the actors were allowed to improvise some of the lines, but it was a good match between the people and the lyrics.
Technically it is a delight. The low lighting in a challenge to tell the story. However, he is not afraid to show scenes with very little light, where you can barely see the relief on some surfaces of the characters. Light is also used as an aid to tell you what to focus on, while varying the scenes and sequences. Shots with a lot of depth something recurrent, without grossly sacrificing focus. So, it follows that they use a tighter aperture to provide depth of field. Also, the sound is very real. Some houses have characteristic noises, and when we move in it takes us a few nights to detect them and get used to them, such as water pipes, electromagnetic fields, animals, contraction of some materials, etc. The ones in this apartment are shown with a double purpose.
A COUPLE OF THEMES
The Humans shows the interaction that can go on in some families. We can't all say we had a perfect family (if you think there is one). So we know that in the midst of these people who love each other can appear old quarrels, unclosed chapters, open wounds susceptible to certain words and actions, as well as a handling of information that can be used as a weapon. Honestly, you may be surprised by some of the poisonous darts that will be thrown between them thanks to the "trust" that exists. They do not cause you death, but they will cause serious discomfort.
Perhaps this is the theme that carries the most weight in this story. Although everyone is gathered for a holiday, the tension that each character brings to the table makes us witness an uncomfortable coexistence between people who theoretically should treat each other better, since they don't see each other often. And thanks to the fact that there are important issues hidden in the second layer, those that are superficial and unimportant become heavier and intolerable. Are we humans really like that? It may be what the title suggests. Something like: "If you're a Martian and you want to know something about what some families have to deal with, watch this so you'll know what to expect, dear little monstrous one."
A man who must behave himself in order to care for his beloved's family. A daughter who struggles with the lack of validation from her parents that still remains in her adulthood. A daughter who does not want to upset her parents and insists on carrying her burden alone. A mother who lives with bitterness and the reasons there might be to change course in her life. And a man who seeks forgiveness and consideration from others and himself continues to invest his energies in caring for his ailing mother. The feeling of in-laws at home. The trust between sisters. The feeling of being out of place in the religious and cultural realm. The dominance that some parents persist in having over their children who have left home. All these themes show that sometimes life is not easy, and that the human essence can change if it gives in to the pressure of the problems faced.
Finally, throughout the film they will be suggesting that a supernatural reason that is hindering the coexistence of the people in that place must be included in the range of possibilities. You will see the slow camera movements only in these moments. There will be movements with no apparent physical force on them. Incomplete reflections and excess of dark places. Shapes and textures that are not pleasing to the eye. Stories of strange dreams. If you want to know the reason for all that you must stay to the end.
THE SCENE
Definitely when they sit down at the table after dinner. Even the basic game they play brings out some of the interests, ambitions and feelings you've suspected about each other throughout the feature, and you can finally confirm it. For me, the best part of this scene is MoMo's email.
MY OPINION
It is a good product, although not aimed at all kinds of viewers. If you are looking to be entertained and have a good time, this may not be your best option, and even less if you are at that family reunion or among friends and they tell you: "You pick the movie ". This one might put you in a bind. But if you are alone or with someone you know their tastes you can invite to watch it and concentrate on the story, and try to find out their intentions and what you would do in similar cases. You won't worry about the details because you will go to see the humans and their stories.
And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 sentences. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, deep, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

"Horror stories for monsters are about humans" (Richard).
A film designed to make you feel that you are inside the house, feel the claustrophobia and darkness that can have some spaces unused for a while, while you visit a family for the first time and feel that the tension can almost touch with your hands. You can be reminded of the not-so-friendly aspects that can surface when we are with a few people, in confidence and can be ourselves, or at least to the extent that we choose to show ourselves. That celebrations have their place, but sometimes are not enough glue to hold families together. Some simple dialogues that will remind you that we are the humans who complicate ourselves.
Con cierta frecuencia me gusta ver películas que probablemente muchos no elegirían ver por considerarlas aburridas. Si fuera así, los directores y las empresas no se molestaran en producirlas, sabiendo que no llegarán lejos. Al verlas, trato de ver dónde está el valor que vieron ellos, su director y el reparto como para terminar éste producto. ¿Qué pude ver de valor en el caso de The Humans (2021)?
VISTA PRELIMINAR
Todo se desarrolla la noche en la que una pareja recibe a la familia de ella en su departamento en Nueva York. Aunque cuenta con varios ambientes y niveles, el lugar tiene pasillos estrechos y lugares "apretados" donde hasta pasar una silla de ruedas es un problema. El ambiente está decorado con paredes cuya pintura ya ha sido palidecida por el tiempo, el desuso y una fuerte humedad omnipresente. Algunos espacios carecen de ventanas, y por ende se depende de una deficiente iluminación artificial que va disminuyendo con el paso de los minutos.
Pero lo fuerte no es el escenario, son las personas. Nombres y caras que ya hemos visto en la pantalla grande y la pantalla chica hace que nos interesemos en lo que ocurrirá en éste peculiar noche entre personas unidas por vínculos sanguíneos pero parece que emocionalmente están en distintos continentes. Al avanzar, parece que el plato fuerte no será lo que comerán, sino lo que algunos han planificado revelar para cuando se sienten a comer. ¿Qué busca cada quién en esa noche? ¿Qué espera uno del otro? ¿Hay algo externo a ellos 6 que conspira contra su buena convivencia?
La forma que está hecha buscará jugar con tu mente, lo cual puede resultar en la estrategia más arriesgada para su aceptación y recomendación. Puede que en las mentes escépticas y con largas horas de exposición al séptimo arte les parezca previsible y lenta, con innecesarios detalles y secuencias. Si te fijas en lo técnico, probablemente te distraiga y valores lo bien cuidado que está la fotografía. Y tal vez los rostros que se ven mantendrán el interés de mantenerte sentado en los tramos más difíciles.
LOS PERSONAJES
Me gusta que a cada personaje le dediquen su tiempo a contarte de dónde viene, cuál es su antecedente, qué le preocupa en esa noche, y algo más sobre su temperamento y opinión sobre los otros en casa. Lo hacen de forma casi imperceptible y natural. La composición simétrica, los planos cerrados y con bastante espacio ocupado en los encuadres con parte de los recursos que se eligieron para mostrarte en quién debes pensar, de quién están hablando, con quién debes conectarte en ésa parte de la historia. Hasta la abuela en silla de ruedas y que tiene delirios y cambios de humor repentinos también tendrá escenas que te sorprenda y reclame la atención.
Pienso que los rasgos físicos que tienen cada actor y actriz compagina muy bien con el personaje que le toca interpretar. El casting puede mostrar hasta algunas coincidencias físicas entre ellos, estereotipos que algunos concuerdan que existen en algunas relaciones, y el temple y carácter que impone cada personaje de la historia.
LO RELEVANTE
En mi opinión, una de las calificaciones más altas que tiene éste producto son la calidad de las actuaciones. Hasta Amy Schumer (Aimee) se muestra acorde con un personaje que está pasando un año difícil física, emocional y económicamente. Con todo, el humor sarcástico sale en algunas escenas tal como los grandes de la comedia saben hacerlo en escenarios complicados. La interacción entre ellos es muy buena. Se supone que son una familia y debe haber la confianza entre ellos para decir y hacer lo que se considera normal. Y absolutamente lo logran, claro que sí. Incluso, las interrupciones en el diálogo lo hacen ver muy cotidiano, haciendo que compres la idea de que son familia de verdad.
La sencillez en la selección de palabras de los diálogos y los temas comunes que se abordan en la familia también es una idea acertada. Es posible que algún espectador sienta empatía por alguno de los personajes que se encuentre en una situación parecida. No estoy seguro de que a los actores se les haya permitido improvisar algunas de las líneas, pero ha sido una buena combinación entre las personas y las letras.
Técnicamente es un deleite. La poca iluminación en un reto para relatar la historia. Con todo, no le tiene miedo a mostrar escenas con muy poca luz, donde apenas se ve el relieve sobre algunas superficies de los personajes. También se aprovecha la luz como ayuda para decirte en qué debes enfocarte, a la vez que varía las escenas y secuencias. Planos con mucha profundidad algo recurrente, sin sacrificar groseramente el enfoque. Por eso, se deduce que usan un diafragma más cerrado que aporte profundidad de campo. También, el sonido es muy real. Algunas casas tienen ruidos característicos, y cuando nos mudamos tardamos algunas noches en poder detectarlos y acostumbrarnos, como tuberías de agua, campos electromagnéticos, animales, contracción de algunos materiales, etc. Los de éste apartamento son mostrados con un doble propósito.
UN PAR DE TEMAS
The Humans muestra la interacción que puede haber en algunas familias. No todos podemos decir que tuvimos una familia perfecta (si es que crees que hay una). Así que sabemos que en medio de estas personas que se aman puede aparecer viejas rencillas, capítulos sin cerrar, heridas abiertas susceptibles a ciertas palabras y acciones, así como un manejo de información que puede utilizarse como arma. Sinceramente, es posible que te sorprenda algunas de los dardos venenosos que se lanzarán entre ellos gracias a la "confianza" que existe. No le causan la muerte, pero sí causarán un serio malestar.
Tal vez éste sea el tema que tenga mayor peso en ésta historia. Aunque todos están reunidos para una fecha festiva, la tensión que va aportando cada personaje va haciendo que presenciemos una incómoda convivencia entre personas que teóricamente deberían tratarse mejor, en vista de que no se ven a menudo. Y gracias a que hay temas importantes escondidos en la segunda capa, los que son superficiales y con poca importancia se hacen más pesados e intolerables. ¿Somos los humanos realmente así? Es posible que sea lo que el título sugiere. Algo así como: "Si eres un marciano y quieres saber algo de lo que algunas familias tienen que atender, mira ésto para que sepas qué esperar, querido monstrico".
Un hombre que debe comportarse bien para atender a la familia de su amada. Una hija que lucha con la falta de validación por parte de sus padres que aún permanece en su edad adulta. Una hija que no quiere molestar a sus padres e insiste en llevar su carga sola. Una madre que convive con la amargura y las razones que pudieran haber para cambiar de rumbo en su vida. Y un hombre que busca el perdón y consideración de otros y de sí mismo sigue invirtiendo sus energías en atender a su madre enferma. La sensación de los suegros en casa. La confianza entre hermanas. El sentimiento de estar desubicado en el campo religioso y cultural. El dominio que algunos padres persisten en tener sobre sus hijos que dejaron su techo. Todos éstos temas muestran que a veces vivir no es sencillo, y que la esencia humana puede cambiar si se entrega a la presión de los problemas que se enfrentan.
Finalmente, durante todo el film estarán sugiriendo que hay que incluir en el rango de posibilidades una razón sobrenatural que esté entorpeciendo la convivencia de las personas en ese lugar. Los lentos movimientos de cámara los verás sólo en estos momentos. Habrá movimientos sin aparente fuerza física sobre ellos. Reflejos incompletos y exceso de lugares oscuros. Formas y texturas que no son agradables a la vista. Relatos de sueños extraños. Si quieres saber la razón de todo eso debes quedarte hasta el final.
LA ESCENA
Definitivamente, cuando se sientan a la mesa luego de cenar. Incluso, el básico juego que realizan saca a la luz algunos de los intereses, ambiciones y sentimientos que has sospechado sobre cada uno durante el largometraje, y puedes finalmente confirmarlo. Para mi, lo mejor de ésta escena es el correo electrónico de MoMo.
MI OPINIÓN
Es un buen producto, aunque no dirigido a toda clase de espectador. Si estas buscando entretenerte y pasar un buen rato, tal vez ésta no sea tu mejor opción, y menos si estás en esa reunión familiar o entre amigos y te dicen: "Escoge tú la película". Ésta quizás te ponga en un aprieto. Pero si estás solo o con alguien que conozcas sus gustos puedes invitar a verla y concentrarte en la historia, y trata de averiguar las intenciones de ellos y qué harías tú en casos parecidos. No te preocuparás por los detalles porque irás a ver a los humanos y sus historias.
Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

Una película diseñada para que sientas que estás dentro de la casa, sientas la claustrofobia y oscuridad que pueden tener algunos espacios sin usar durante un tiempo, a la vez que visitas a una familia por primera vez y sientes que la tensión se puede casi que tocar con las manos. Se puede recordar los aspectos no tan amables que pueden aflorar cuando estamos con pocas personas, en confianza y podemos ser nosotros mismos, o al menos hasta donde decidimos mostrarnos. Que las celebraciones tienen su lugar, pero a veces no es el pegamento suficiente para mantener unidas a las familias. Unos diálogos sencillos que te recordarán que somos los humanos que nos complicamos.
