Why I'm not opening my Chaos Legion packs (yet)

I did reach my goal and gathered enough credits to purchase 500 packs to get the better bulk purchase tier of 15% (+ 75 packs). Adding that to the 110 packs from presale, in total I have purchased 685 packs which when adding voucher and potion purchases puts my investment over +$3000 which is quite a hefty amount to put into a card game. However, all of the packs I bought with crypto, unlike the Untamed cards which I bought with fiat back in the day. And considering that my crypto stack has gained significant value since Untamed days, the weight "three thousand dollars" carries, isn't that big, because percentage wise it is much smaller portion from my crypto stack than fiat.

Also the fact that the cards hold economic value weighs heavily into the decision. I played Hearthstone very seriously back in the day. I was quite close to making it to regional Preliminaries (from where you proceed to World Championships). All as a Free-to-Player. It was quite a grind. The deal breaker for never putting a single dime into the game, was that the cards have no economic value, so unless you're a big streamer or a world class player, there's no way to capitilize on them.

Splinterlands is a different beast with its play-to-earn model where a whole economy and rental market has been created around card ownership. Having a fond to card games and having investor mindset, Splinterlands is very attractive to me.

Anyhow, to the point: there is an argument that you shouldn't open your packs yet. Well, two actually, the other is that the SPS airdrop points you get from packs is on average more than what the contents of your pack will give. But the more important argument has to do with

Airdrops

For every 1 million CL packs sold, there's going to be 1 new airdrop released. However, an important point to realize is that after the airdrop is released, it'll be available from packs as well. I heard rumors that there's going to be legendary summoners coming down the way. Summoners are always going to be more valuable than an average card of the same rarity. The other airdrops I suspect will be pretty good as well. So, waiting until the legendary summoners are available from packs could increase the expected value you can get from packs.

I'm really itching to open the packs, but still don't mind waiting, since I still need to collect some credits to purchase legendary potions anyway. I will accumulate credits using liquidity pool earnings from BeeSwap and card rental income, since I'd rather not spend anymore HIVE.

My highest league I've reached is Gold II, but once I open the packs, my goal is to reach Diamond with the new leveled up cards. I will keep my eye on some earlier edition cards, too, which will most likely also get cheaper for a period.
