I’ve been noticing an increase in new user activity over the past few weeks, which suggests that more onboarding is happening recently. I believe this is a result of the OCD team's onboarding efforts, which appear to be an effective strategy for bringing new users onto the platform. They not only introduce new people but also provide the necessary support to help these users start building their accounts successfully.

From my observations, the new users onboarded by the OCD team tend to post regularly, engage with others, leave thoughtful comments, and frequently reblog other users' posts. It’s evident that they’re being guided effectively, particularly when it comes to the social aspects of the platform. This approach is beneficial because it helps them gain attention from other users and secure additional support from curators. I think this is an excellent practice for onboarding new users and retaining them.

I’ve also noticed that new users onboarded by other groups or communities exhibit similar activity patterns to those onboarded by OCD.

Just yesterday, for example, I gained three new followers who also reblogged some of my posts. At first, I wondered why it was becoming more common for new users to reblog posts. Then I realized that, on the PeakD frontend, notifications are filtered by default to show only:

  • Upvotes above a certain threshold
  • Follows
  • Comments
  • Mentions
  • Reblogs

If I were a new user on the platform, my goal would naturally be to attract more attention to my blog. A good way to achieve this would be to appear in other users' notifications.

For new users who are still building their Hive Power, their upvotes may not yet meet the minimum threshold to appear in someone’s PeakD notifications. This means the tools they can use to get noticed are the Follow and Reblog features.

Since it’s only ethical to use the Follow feature once per user, it’s not something that can be repeatedly employed. However, the Reblog tool offers another way for new users to appear in specific users’ notifications.

I believe the Reblog feature is a powerful tool because it allows users to share someone’s post with their own followers. This helps bring fresh attention to a post that might otherwise be buried under the influx of new content.

In this way, reblogging benefits both the original author and the reblogger. The reblogger can introduce the post to a new audience, while also catching the author’s attention by appearing in their notifications.

This might explain why some contests reward participants simply for reblogging contest-related posts. For some, the effort of reblogging a post is seen as valuable.

Personally, I appreciate those who reblog my posts because it motivates me to check out their blogs. Often, if I find their content interesting, I’ll even upvote their posts. In this sense, the Reblog feature encourages greater interaction on the platform, beyond just posting content and commenting.

In conclusion, the Reblog feature is an invaluable tool for fostering engagement and collaboration on the platform. It not only helps amplify quality content but also encourages meaningful connections between users. By leveraging features like Reblog and Follow thoughtfully, we can create a thriving and supportive community that benefits everyone involved.
