Cuando hago referencia al desconocimiento, lo hago sobre la base de mi experiencia y la de muchos padres y docentes que también transitan este camino, quienes se encuentran con un diagnóstico, muchas veces desesperanzador y que aún así continúan buscando a las personas indicadas y las estrategias que les permitan visualizar y desarrollar esa capacidad que muchas veces cuesta descubrir en ellos pero que siempre terminamos descubriéndola.

When I refer to the lack of knowledge, I do it on the basis of my experience and that of many parents and teachers who also walk this path, who are faced with a diagnosis that is often hopeless and still continue looking for the right people and strategies that allow them to visualize and develop that ability that is often difficult to discover in them but that we always end up discovering it.
Nuestros niños tienen algo que puede jugar a su favor o en contra, NOSOTROS. Quienes estamos a su cargo necesitamos ser un poco más receptivos y tratar de entender lo que a veces, hasta sin palabras nos quieren decir. Es un error tratar de silenciarlos o menospreciar sus ideas por el hecho de que tienen autismo. No podemos coartar su manera de expresarse. Muchas veces son más los prejuicios que tenemos en ese sentido que lo que realmente la persona con autismo puede o no hacer, ejemplos tenemos muchísimos. Grandes músicos, artistas, científicos, y un gran etcétera de personas que por presentar esta discapacidad, las tildaron de incompletos, de faltos de inteligencia o de incapaces; sin embargo, con la ayuda de la persona a su cargo en unos casos y por la persistencia y diligencia de la misma persona en otros hoy son reconocidos por su trabajo.
En ningún caso estoy diciendo que atiborremos a nuestros niños con actividades de todo tipo o que los pongamos a hacer actividades en contra de su voluntad con la excusa de que "ellos pueden". Lo que si digo es que cuando ellos nos hablen de hacer algo que les gustaría o que, como padres observadores, nos demos cuenta que tienen tendencia hacia una actividad deportiva, cultural, artística, entre otras; no nos hagamos los ciegos o los sabios tratando de obviar sus inquietudes. Para muchos de ellos, una meta puede ser el solo hecho de encajar en este mundo, pero para otros su meta puede ir más allá de nuestras expectativas. No le hagamos sentir que quieren más de lo que pueden hacer, ayudémosles a llegar a donde ellos saben que pueden.
Our children have something that can play in their favor or against them, WE. Those of us who are in charge of them need to be a little more receptive and try to understand what sometimes, even without words, they want to tell us. It is a mistake to try to silence them or belittle their ideas because they have autism. We cannot restrict their way of expressing themselves. Many times there are more prejudices that we have in that sense than what the person with autism can or cannot really do, we have many examples. Great musicians, artists, scientists, and a great etcetera of people that for presenting this disability, they were labeled as incomplete, lacking intelligence or incapable; however, with the help of the person in charge in some cases and by the persistence and diligence of the same person in others, today they are recognized for their work.
In no case am I saying that we stuff our children with activities of all kinds or that we put them to do activities against their will with the excuse that "they can". What I am saying is that when they talk to us about doing something they would like to do or that, as observant parents, we realize that they have a tendency towards a sporting, cultural or artistic activity, among others; we should not pretend to be blind or wise and try to ignore their concerns. For many of them, a goal may be just to fit into this world, but for others their goal may go beyond our expectations. Let's not make them feel like they want more than they can do, let's help them get to where they know they can.
