Sometimes when you're messing with Photoshop on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you stumble across an image which looked great in colour but suddenly much more dramatic in black and white. And then you think, hey, why not try this on some more? This then is a post of some of my photos converted to monochrome:
Take me to your monochromatic leader
In the original colour version of this, the walls of this railway cutting were covered in moss and all sorts of other green flora and fauna. Possibly too much green so converting to monochrome appears to give this a little kick!
On the beach at Steetley Pier
Another image where the moonlight colours were somehow a bit eerie but converting to black and white created a different mood again.
Haze through the needle
This was an experimental shot where I used a smoke grenade to create the haze emanating from the monument. Converting to mono somehow made the image look brighter, weird....
Lincoln, cathedral and city at night
When I shot this, the cathedral was lit with a blue / purple hue and completely mismatched the orange tones in the foreground. A quick conversion to mono soon sorted that!
Monocropolis
This water tower plinth brick structure is epic as foreground interest and brickwork always looks good in monochrome in my opinion!
Flamborough Head Lighthouse
Another example where the colour tones in the sky looked a bit "muddy" or brown with the light pollution in the sky. Not sure if this one works in mono but I think it may grow on me!
Waiting for the night to fall
I originally shot this during the blue hour period before dark and the tones were pretty much all blue. I was surprised how well this worked in black and white.
The One Mile Telescope
The green tones in the foreground from the grass and the blues from the sky didn't work that well together so again converting to monochrome helps here.
Moonlight and monochrome
This was a simple test shot using the moon as the only light source. The moon tones were a bit weird almost like I'd messed up the white balance so black and white soon fixes that.
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in landscape, urbex and artistic model photography. I like to collaborate with other photographers and occasionally shoot outside my comfort zone.
