One day, I was chatting with some Brazilian friends on WhatsApp, and I'm not sure how it happened, but I ended up talking about Alberta, the province where I live in Canada. Usually, it is rare to see a Brazilian who has ever heard of Alberta, which is normal. Before coming to Canada, I only had heard about Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, which are cities in famous provinces such as British Columbia, Ontário and Quebec. But one friend mentioned that the only thing he knew about Alberta was the Albertosaurus. I laughed a lot. Alberta is indeed a great source of dinosaur fossils and they discovered plenty of them here, including the carnivorous Albertosaurus and also the calm Edmontosaurus (in honor of the Province's capital, Edmonton). But Alberta has their own discussions that are trendy now, we have the Measles cases rising in the province.

Now we see all over the social media people discussing every new trendy topic. And the same arguments that people brought up during other vaccination topics, such as COVID, are brought again. And the eternal discussion about Freedom vs Responsibility and Life vs Autonomy. What is moral and ethical when thinking about this topic? There is a philosopher who used to be a big protector of individual freedoms called John Stuart Mill (the same who claimed that democracy was the Tyranny of the majority) who said:

"The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it."

So when your decisions are affecting other people, your claim to absolute freedom weakens. Another point, why do people complain so much when no one regulates that? Right now, in Canada, there isn't any law telling individuals that they must be vaccinated for Measles or any other vaccine. Why don't we have a law even if, in theory, this law would be based on ethical and moral principles? On the other hand, a more straightforward law punishing those who kill another person is right there. This type of law can be seen even in the Ten Commandments written in the Torah (Old Testament), the famous "You shall not kill".

I don't want to discuss in this post about any vaccine efficacy, possible side effects or even a probability of being killed by disease X, Y, Z. But is interesting how potlicians and society think about in one hand public safety issue (like murder) while others—like vaccination—are treated as more complicated, even when they also involve protecting lives.

In the end, the discussion about ethics and morality isn't just some words to exist in theory. They shape all the rules that make us live in the community. They should protect our individual choices, but also protect the collectivity. When these two begin to contradict each other, that’s where the real challenge lies. One thing that I always like to think about when there is a fight between sides A against B, is that the real truth is between both sides.

Um dia, eu estava conversando com alguns amigos brasileiros no WhatsApp, e não sei bem como aconteceu, mas acabei falando sobre Alberta, a província onde moro no Canadá. Normalmente, é raro ver um brasileiro que já tenha ouvido falar de Alberta, o que é normal. Antes de vir para o Canadá, eu só tinha ouvido falar de Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto e Montreal, que são cidades em províncias famosas como British Columbia, Ontário e Quebec. Mas um amigo mencionou que a única coisa que ele sabia sobre Alberta era o Albertosaurus. Eu ri muito. Alberta é de fato uma grande fonte de fósseis de dinossauros e eles descobriram muitos deles aqui, incluindo o carnívoro Albertosaurus e também o calmo Edmontosaurus (em homenagem à capital da província, Edmonton). Mas Alberta tem suas próprias discussões que estão na moda agora, temos os casos de sarampo aumentando na província.

Agora vemos em todas as redes sociais pessoas discutindo todos os novos tópicos da moda. E os mesmos argumentos que as pessoas levantaram durante outros tópicos de vacinação, como a COVID, são trazidos novamente. E a eterna discussão sobre Liberdade vs. Responsabilidade e Vida vs. Autonomia. O que é moral e ético quando se pensa sobre esse assunto? Há um filósofo que costumava ser um grande defensor das liberdades individuais chamado John Stuart Mill (o mesmo que afirmava que a democracia era a tirania da maioria) que disse:

"A única liberdade que merece esse nome é a de buscar o nosso próprio bem à nossa maneira, desde que não tentemos privar os outros do deles, ou impedir seus esforços para obtê-lo."
— John Stuart Mill, Sobre a Liberdade (1859)

Então, quando suas decisões afetam outras pessoas, sua reivindicação à liberdade absoluta enfraquece. Outro ponto: por que as pessoas reclamam tanto quando ninguém regulamenta isso? Atualmente, no Canadá, não existe nenhuma lei que obrigue os indivíduos a se vacinarem contra o sarampo ou qualquer outra vacina. Por que não temos uma lei, mesmo que, em teoria, essa lei seja baseada em princípios éticos e morais? Por outro lado, existe uma lei mais direta que pune aqueles que matam outra pessoa. Esse tipo de lei pode ser visto até mesmo nos Dez Mandamentos escritos na Torá (Antigo Testamento), o famoso "Não matarás".

Não quero discutir neste post sobre a eficácia de qualquer vacina, possíveis efeitos colaterais ou mesmo a probabilidade de morte pela doença X, Y, Z. Mas é interessante como os políticos e a sociedade pensam, por um lado, em questões de segurança pública (como assassinato), enquanto outras — como a vacinação — são tratadas como mais complexas, mesmo quando também envolvem a proteção de vidas.

No fim das contas, a discussão sobre ética e moralidade não se resume a apenas algumas palavras que existem na teoria. Elas moldam todas as regras que nos fazem viver em comunidade. Elas devem proteger nossas escolhas individuais, mas também proteger a coletividade. Quando essas duas começam a se contradizer, é aí que reside o verdadeiro desafio. Uma coisa que sempre gosto de pensar quando há uma luta entre os lados A e B é que a verdade real está entre os dois lados.
