Si no fuera porque utilicé como título la frase "Lo viejo funciona" en una publicación de un par de días atrás, lo hubiera hecho hoy, aunque solo me habría servido para hablar del encuentro entre Inter y Fluminense, increíble que un equipo tan veterano haya vencido a otro que si bien no rebosa de juventud tiene un promedio de edad sensiblemente menor.
Por consiguiente, utilizo este otro que rememora una película que ya tiene unos cuantos años, 20 al menos, un filme no demasiado conocido ni publicitado, aunque la participación de un grande pero controversial actor como Kevin Spacey le haya dado un cartel más importante al que hubiera tenido sin su ayuda, como sea, una película "del montón".
Este titulado también me viene bien para hablar un poco de lo ocurrido en el mundial de clubes, las dos sorpresas grandes en la tarde/noche de ayer por octavos de final.
Temprano se enfrentaron el Inter de Milán y el Fluminense, pese a que yo lo veía como un encuentro bastante parejo, el hecho de que un equipo de Europa, lleno de estrellas internacionales estuviera de un lado del campo, inclinaba en parte mis preferencias y las de muchos otros, no obstante, es necesario aclarar en la etapa previa esa diferencia no se notó.
Nadie puede negar que esta temporada no ha sido la mejor para los italianos, por el contrario, han sufrido varias decepciones a lo largo del año, principalmente su derrota en la Champions League que provocó un duro golpe en las aspiraciones del equipo de Milán, nadie esperaba una goleada tan abultada, no es algo acostumbrado entre equipos que se supone son de un nivel similar.
Quizás aquella derrota haya sido la causa de esta otra, no es sencillo recuperarse de tan dura lección.
Y el Flu tuvo algo de suerte al marcar apenas comenzó el encuentro, el veterano jugador argentino Germán Cano entró "como Pancho por su casa" diría mi abuela al área chica y marcó de cabeza entre las piernas del arquero mientras toda la defensa del Inter lo miraba como si fuera un jugador propio y no uno del rival. Enorme distracción. Ese gol le dio toda la tranquilidad que necesitaba el equipo brasileño y sacó buen provecho de ello.
Las estadísticas marcan que el Inter tuvo un mayor dominio de la pelota, inclusive más situaciones de gol, más corners y otros números positivos, lo que no dicen esos números es que el Fluminense siempre pareció estar más cerca de ampliar la diferencia, en definitiva, sus contragolpes eran visualmente más peligrosos que el solo hecho de tener la pelota más tiempo, como lo hacía el Inter. El mismo Lautaro Martinez, capitán y referente del equipo italiano confesó que a su equipo le falta convicción. El segundo gol llegó cuando todo se acababa, a otra cosa. Primera sorpresa de estos octavos de final.
Por la noche el chasco mayor, esta sí que no se la esperaba nadie, el vigente campeón de la liga más fuerte de Europa, el Manchester City, perdió con un equipo saudí que hizo una buena primera fase, aunque una posible victoria suya no estaba en los cálculos de nadie, ni siquiera en los de los acérrimos simpatizantes de toda Arabia Saudita.
Y aquí sí que se quemaron los papeles porque los ciudadanos hicieron una primera fase impecable, la mejor entre todos los equipos participantes de la competencia.
Su eliminación ha sido la mayor sorpresa hasta el momento y se debió a un encuentro electrizante donde abundaron los goles y las jugadas de peligro. El propio Guardiola, a mi modo de ver el DT más importante de los últimos tiempos, reconoció errores, al City le faltó balance y tranquilidad, pagó muy caro la falta de control del encuentro y algunos errores defensivos groseros que terminaron con tantos en contra.
Por el contrario, el Al-Hilal aprovechó cada instante favorable para llevarse una victoria que dejó pasmados a todos.
Dos grandes de la poderosa Europa dejan el torneo en forma prematura, quizás para recordarnos a todos que el fútbol es un deporte de equipo, donde las figuras pueden fallar o ser superadas por el juego colectivo de un equipo en teoría inferior, no es habitual, pero ocurre cada tanto.
Ahora el Fluminense y el Al-Hilal definirán un semifinalista, cualquiera de los dos estará en un lugar impensado en lo previo, ¿hasta dónde llegarán?
The surprise factor
If it weren't for the fact that I used the phrase "Old Works" as the title in a post a couple of days ago, I would have done so today, although it would only have served to talk about the match between Inter and Fluminense. Incredibly, such an experienced team beat another that, while not brimming with youth, has a noticeably younger average age.
Therefore, I'm using this other title, which recalls a film that's already a few years old, 20 at least, a film that isn't very well-known or advertised, although the participation of a great but controversial actor like Kevin Spacey has given it a bigger following than it would have had without his help—still, a "run-of-the-mill" film.
This title also comes in handy to talk a little about what happened at the Club World Cup, the two big surprises yesterday afternoon/evening in the Round of 16.
Inter Milan and Fluminense faced each other early on. Although I saw it as a fairly even match, the fact that a European team, full of international stars, was on one side of the pitch partly tilted my preference, and that of many others. However, it's worth clarifying that, in the lead-up to the match, this difference wasn't noticeable.
No one can deny that this season hasn't been the best for the Italians. On the contrary, they've suffered several disappointments throughout the year, most notably their Champions League defeat, which dealt a severe blow to the Milan team's aspirations. No one expected such a resounding defeat; it's not something common among teams that are supposed to be of a similar level.
Perhaps that defeat was the cause of this one; it's not easy to recover from such a harsh lesson.
And Flu had some luck scoring just as the match began. Veteran Argentine player Germán Cano entered the six-yard box "like Pancho at home," as my grandmother would say, and headed the ball between the goalkeeper's legs while the entire Inter defense looked at him as if he were their player and not one of their opponents. A huge distraction. That goal gave the Brazilian team all the peace of mind they needed, and they took full advantage of it.
The statistics show that Inter had greater possession of the ball, including more scoring opportunities, more corners, and other positive numbers. What those numbers don't say is that Fluminense always seemed closer to extending their lead. Ultimately, their counterattacks were visually more dangerous than simply having possession of the ball longer, as Inter did. Lautaro Martinez, the Italian team's captain and key figure, himself confessed that his team lacks conviction. The second goal came when everything was about to end, onto something else. The first surprise of this round of 16.
The biggest disappointment of the night—this one no one expected—was the reigning champion of Europe's strongest league, Manchester City, who lost to a Saudi team that had a good first phase, although a possible victory for them wasn't in anyone's mind, not even those of their die-hard fans throughout Saudi Arabia.
And here, the writing was on the wall because the citizens had an impeccable first phase, the best of all the teams participating in the competition.
Their elimination was the biggest surprise so far, due to an electrifying match filled with goals and dangerous plays. Guardiola himself, in my opinion, the most important manager of recent times, acknowledged his mistakes. City lacked balance and composure, paying dearly for their lack of control and some gross defensive errors that ended with them conceding.
On the other hand, Al-Hilal took advantage of every favorable moment to claim a victory that stunned everyone.
Two giants of Europe's mighty league are leaving the tournament prematurely, perhaps to remind us all that football is a team sport, where stars can fail or be overtaken by the collective play of a team that's supposedly inferior. It's not common, but it happens every now and then.
Now, Fluminense and Al-Hilal will determine a semifinalist. Either side will be in a previously unthinkable position. How far will they go?
