Free Speech Free Thought

Freedoms are not taken all at once. They are taken one inch at a time. First, they take the low hanging fruit to condition you into accepting small freedoms being taken. Inches gone are not noticed until they become miles. By that time, it’s too late...

This proposed topic is very interesting here by @theycallmedan.
Freedom of speech has always been under attack and I fully share this sentence by @theycallmedan:

Freedoms are not taken all at once. They are taken one inch at a time. First, they take the low hanging fruit to condition you into accepting small freedoms being taken. Inches gone are not noticed until they become miles. By that time, it's too late ...

Why is freedom of speech so important?
I believe that freedom of speech is closely related to freedom of thought. Many thoughts are often crowded in our mind, often incongruent, the process of rationalization occurs when we speak or when we write. By fixing our thoughts, selecting this mass of thoughts we extract what we really share, what is truly our thought.
For this reason, limiting the freedom of speech or expression means limiting the freedom of thought .

I speak specifically of Italy because it is the country where I live and which, therefore, I know best.

In Italy we have witnessed other times the attempt, more or less successful, to limit and sanction freedom of thought.

During the period in which the Red Brigades and other far-left terrorist formations were active, some intellectuals were tried and sentenced with the sole motivation of having provided the theoretical basis for terrorism, of having somehow instigated and justified the terrorist actions, while having personally and directly had nothing to do with the legs, the murders, the kidnappings and the attacks.

It was therefore a stigma and a clearly political persecution, political opinions not in line with power were being pursued.
What is happening in Italy today is something much more worrying, because what we are trying to do is to sanction and block the opinions divergents from the mainstream ones not for political reasons, but mainly for not adhering to a narrative of reality, using the pick of the so-called fake news .

In particular, we appeal to the opinion of so-called experts to determine what is true and what is false, trying to silence those who do not think the same way.
The COVID-19 emergency has strongly accelerated this process, leading for example to close a television broadcast because the conductor, a certain Panzironi, claimed that integrating the diet with vitamin C and vitamin D would be a good method to improve one's immune system and, therefore, have a better immune response in general and in particular against SARS-CoV-2.
This statement of his is an obvious one, how is it possible then to end a transmission for this?

Textually, his words could have led to

an underestimation of the potential risks associated with Covid-19 disease

the erroneous belief that the virus itself can be treated or prevented with non-therapeutic, but dietary or supplementary measures

What worries me is not, in my opinion, however, the motivation that led to the blocking of its transmission, but the very fact that in Italy there is an authority, the AGCOM (Authority for communications) that has the possibility to block a transmission, whatever the reasons.

In my opinion, such discretion should not exist, it undermines freedom of speech and thought.

Another striking case that has taken place in recent days is the complaint with request for the blackout of the youtube channel and of all the information channels of @byoblu, an independent journalist who takes care of a newsletter and various information broadcasts.

This request was made by a self-styled Transversal pact for science to the judiciary.

What is @byoblu accused of?

To have interviewed Dr. Stefano Montanari, who exposed his thoughts on COVID-19, definitely alternative to official information.

In this case, not having heard the interview, I don't know exactly what Montanari said, it could also be legitimate to report Dr. Stefano Montanari even if I strongly doubt he could have made criminally relevant statements, but, in my opinion, it cannot be absolutely acceptable to report who interviewed him and who spreads his interview.
In this case too it is an attack on free information, freedom of speech and thought.

Finally I would like to mention the so-called fake news task force established by the government in Italy.

This control structure which, apparently, should decide what is true and what is false, in Italy, in addition to remembering the Orwell Ministry of Truth, brings to mind the notorious MinCulPop (Ministry of Popular Culture, which distributed tissue papers to newspapers, forcing them to publish the regime propaganda, eliminating uncomfortable news and deleting entire parts of newspapers if not in line with the fascist thought.
I close by recalling that freedom of expression is, in Italy, sanctioned by the Constitution and is something that our grandparents have had to conquer at the cost of their lives, let's not forget it.

Art. 21 of the Italian Constitution:

Everyone has the right to freely express their thoughts with the word, the written word and any other means of diffusion. The press cannot be subject to authorization or censorship.
