La mayoría de los modelos que se exhiben allí aún circulan por las ciudades. My adventure in Santiago de Cuba continued, and after exploring the famous Valley of Prehistory, we headed to a new destination that filled me with excitement: the Automotive Museum. From the moment we got off the bus, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t what I had imagined. Instead of a closed, modern building, I found an open space with a roof that barely seemed to protect the vehicles from the elements. But what truly impressed me wasn’t the structure, but what was under that roof: vintage treasures on wheels.
Each of those cars seemed to have a story to tell. I could imagine them in their golden years, cruising through the streets of Cuba, carrying couples in love, entire families, or even businesspeople of the time. How many memories do those cars hold inside them? How many life stories must have intertwined in those worn leather seats, how many trips and adventures they’ve experienced.
The Automotive Museum of Santiago de Cuba isn’t just a place to see vintage cars; it’s a testament to the evolution of transportation in Cuba and the ingenuity of the Cuban people. Most of the models on display are still running in the cities. Due to the shortage of new cars and the high cost of obtaining one, Cubans have become true mechanics, managing to keep these cars running, and with great dignity! These cars are part of our daily life, not just a symbol of the past, but of our creativity and perseverance.
One of the most beautiful experiences I had there was when one of the security girls allowed me to take a photo inside one of the cars. It was my favorite moment of the day! I felt like I was part of that story, even if it was just for a brief moment.
In the end, this museum isn’t just a collection of vehicles; it’s a reminder of everything we’ve lived through, of how we adapt, of how the past and present intertwine in the wheels of these cars.
