⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵...(Tour of "High Island")...

[Last time...]

As the banging on the door got louder, the angry voice of the French Governor rang out from within…

“Arrêtez tout ce tapage!“

“Very sorry to disturb you Sir!” (Translated), “But we have an officer here from the French Royal Navy who insists on seeing you…” The guard said as he stood in front of the tall, weather-beaten oak doors of the Governor’s house. (See: )

[Fort Kingston...inside the Governor's house...] “You stand before me to tell me that Commander Gagnon is dead and La Serpent it lost?!” [Translated from French]

The First Mate Louis looked down sadly…” Yes, Sir...” “This is unthinkable! Who is this focking rogue Slane?!! This is the second ship in a year that he has taken from the French Navy! And now has killed a Commander?! Paris will hear of this by God! Oh yes, Paris will hear of this!”

Louis looked up at the red face of the enraged governor and swallowed hard…

“What other vessel do we have on the lake?!” “None Sir, La Serpent was our only patrol ship.”

“By the wrath of God man! The whole of France will hunt this pirate down and put his head in the hangman’s noose!”

[On the Silverton…surgery room…] Warrant Officer Errislravenhill pulled the last stitch tight and knotted it, then cut the thread with scissors. Pulling her mask off and stepping back, she took a deep breath…

“Ye saved heem lass, ye bludy weel saved heem! An' in th' nick o' time!” Warrant Officer Hack acknowledged as he tossed his own mask aside and reached for a cigarette rolling paper. “Dornt gonnie nae...” Errisl said politely though it was actually an order, “He needs caller air…” Hack nodded silently and sat down on his stool. Both surgeons were thoroughly exhausted as the ship’s bell struck three into the morning watch...

[On the forecastle deck…] Cockpit Mate Andofzara and Petty Officer Yprecious Stood next to the portside rail, gazing south as they took time for a smoke when Junior Petty Officer Nealfa jogged up the short stairs and saluted…

“Mind if I join you Sirs?” He asked.

“As ye will sailur…” Andofzara replied with a slight nod. Nealfa pulled out a short pipe, packed it well and lit it in the dark. Soon a small red ball of burning tobacco lit-up his face as he took a few drags on the stem. “What do you think Sairrr? Will Galligan makes it?” Yprecious asked nervously. Andofzara looked up and jerked his head in a half move sideways that told them his answer before he spoke, “Ahh don’t know…but if anyain can sav heem it will be Errisl...” Yprecious glanced out over the dark waters and nodded before looking down. Suddenly a commotion on the main galley stairs broke their sad meditation. Junior Petty Officers Ilversaver888 and Ve3 ran up in an excited stir…

*“Sir?! Sir?! The Commander’s going to makes it!” Ilver called out loudly as she ran. “The surgery is over! Officer Hack is passin' on the word!” Ve3 called out after her. The two mounted the stairs in one full leap each and as they made their way quickly to the center of the forecastle ignoring protocol. The five joyous sailors hugged one another and slapped each other’s backs. Sheer joy set them all free from the cold, dark night. ⛵ ⛵ ⛵ ⛵
