Hot Creek Geological Site is one of those places that are one of a kind.
All this area around Mammoth has a lot of geothermal activity, it was once a vulcano that erupted around 760 thousand years ago. After the eruption, the empty caldera formed a huge depression that still has a lot of activity until today.
The water that melts from the snow in the mountains penetrates the cracks in the rocks and go very deep like a few kilometers or miles deep. The water reaches the magma bed underneath and then resurfaces, very hot, in many spots around the area of the caldera.
The creek has a lot of cold water flowing from the mountains and mixes up with the hot water that is resurfacing from the depths. You can see the water bubbling in many spots and a lot of steam. You can also smell sulfur near the creek. Some spots are so hot that it can burn the skin.

Toda essa área ao redor de Mammoth tem muita atividade geotérmica, pois já foi um vulcão que entrou em erupção há cerca de 760 mil anos. Após a erupção, a caldeira vazia formou uma enorme depressão que ainda mantém muita atividade até hoje.
A água que derrete da neve nas montanhas penetra nas rachaduras das rochas e vai muito fundo, como alguns quilômetros de profundidade. A água alcança o leito de magma, esquenta e depois ressurge, muito quente, em muitos pontos ao redor da área da caldeira.
Este riacho tem muita água fria que flui das montanhas e se mistura com a água quente que está ressurgindo das profundezas. Você pode ver a água borbulhando em muitos pontos e muito vapor. Também é possível sentir o cheiro de enxofre perto do riacho. Alguns pontos são tão quentes que podem queimar a pele.
