Sometimes you get a ring and you need to check if it is a diamond

When you faced with the dilemma of buying a diamond ring always err on the side of caution as since the 1990s Moissanite is the number 1 substitute for Diamonds in jewellery. Found in the late 1800s by a Nobel prize winner even he thought it was a diamond but it turns out it is Silicone Carbide, it maybe more reflective and nearly as hard as a diamond but it is not a diamond.

Moissanite in its natural form is very rare as it is only found close to Meteor strikes but has been commercially lab grown since the 1990s and is being more sought after as it is more ethical than diamonds, it takes about 3 months to grow a Moissanite in a lab and needs to be cut in a similar way to diamonds. The problem is that it fools most diamond testers and requires a moissanite tester and not a gem selector.

The testers are not expensive and should be any kit of any antiques dealer or jewellers, to use the tester it is super simple. Turn the device on and press the button on the back and press the probe gently against the stone needing testing and it will indicate diamond or mossanite.

I used two rings to show the both results but there is always some easy signs to tell if is a diamond without a tester. First of all especially in Great Britain most rings with Diamonds will have DIA stamped in them but this is not always the case and you don't usually get big diamonds mounted in 9ct gold but it is always worth checking as even my 18ct ring doesnt say DIA and this is a nice diamond.

The ring with the Diamond i tested is just over a quarter carat and is mounted in French 18ct gold and lives on my pinky, the ring with the moissonite is 9ct and you would struggle to tell as it catches the light just as nicely and it near twice the size but not worth a patch.
