Hey Y'all
Well it has been raining non-stop here in Virginia which affords me the opportunity to take a little break from work on my lake lot and to do a quick update.
When I meet new people, especially with other males, the question inevitably comes up: what do you do? Obviously I fill them in on my lot clearing efforts since it has been my near daily project since October of last year. Of course this brings about the question of why would I spend the time to do such a large DIY undertaking?
So I thought I would take a moment to ponder this on paper. First, the most obvious answer that comes to mind is to save money. As anyone that is acquainted with me, even on a superficial level, knows that I am a cheap ass, and that if I can save a buck or three, I will! However the second reason is a bit more complicated. You see to me there is a certain pride in doing the work yourself. In the old days, hard work was seen as a virtue whereas nowadays it seems to be thought of as lowly and beneath most people. Yet there is even a third reason that is quite a bit more difficult to put down in print. Perhaps it all stems from the fact that my brain may be somewhat miswired. I suppose the best way for me to describe it is to refer to an old childhood story that I loved to read. Do you remember the Mark Twain classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? In that story, I learned from Tom Sawyer that taking the long way, even with its various difficulties, can sometimes be the most enjoyable way. Most folks may find it strange, but I actually enjoy the work LOL!
