On my way to the office after a morning full of meetings, I decided to do something different. Instead of following the highway as usual, I opted for a calmer but slower route: the national road. I had already passed by there many times, but always in a hurry, focused on other things than what was around me. But it was on that day, perhaps for the first time, that I noticed Navais, a small parish that is part of the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim.

A caminho do escritório, depois de uma manhã cheia de reuniões, decidi fazer algo diferente. Em vez de seguir como habitualmente pela autoestrada, optei por um caminho mais calmo , mas mais demorado: a estrada nacional. Já tinha passado ali imensas vezes, mas sempre com pressa, focada em outras coisas menos no que me rodeava. Mas foi nesse dia, talvez pela primeira vez, que reparei em Navais, uma pequena freguesia que faz parte do concelho da Póvoa de Varzim.
Navais appears discreetly in the landscape, more precisely on my right side at the intersection, after the traffic lights:-) There among green fields and houses, this parish has a past that dates back to medieval times. His name appears in ancient documents with variants such as “De Nabales”.

I decided to stop the car and stretch my legs. The morning had been tough, and I had a lot to do but it wasn't easy to focus. Dozens of thoughts at the same time without even being able to prioritize what needed to be done. As I walked through the quiet streets, I began to feel that typical atmosphere of the northern coast: a mix of rurality, history and faith. Right in front of me was the Church of the Divine Savior of Navais, which stood out at the end of a small square.

Decidi parar o carro e esticar as pernas. A manhã tinha sido dura, e tinha muita coisa para fazer mas não estava a ser fácil focar-me. Dezenas de pensamentos ao mesmo tempo sem consegui sequer priorizar o que havia para ser feito. À medida que caminhava pelas ruas tranquilas, comecei a sentir aquele ambiente típico das localidades do norte litoral: uma mistura de ruralidade, história e fé. Mesmo à minha frente estava a Igreja do Divino Salvador de Navais que se destacava ao fundo de uma pequena praça.
The church is dedicated to the Divine Savior, patron saint of the parish. The current building is the result of several renovations over the centuries (like several I've already mentioned here), but there are records of its existence since at least the 13th century.

A igreja é dedicada ao Divino Salvador, orago da freguesia. O edifício atual resulta de várias reformas ao longo dos séculos (como vários que já aqui vos falei), mas há registos da sua existência desde, pelo menos, o século XIII.
The interior is very beautiful and is marked by typical Baroque and Neoclassical features, with decorated altars, religious images of great symbolic value and a pipe organ. More than a place of prayer, churches are also a meeting point for residents. The festivities in honor of the Divine Savior and Saint Luzia, for example, continue to bring many people to the place.
While I was there, for a few brief minutes, I allowed myself to empty my mind. People greeted each other on the street, some tended their gardens, and others gathered at the church door, in an atmosphere of closeness that is rarely found in big cities.

O interior é muito bonito e está marcado por características típicas do barroco e do neoclássico, com altares decorados, imagens religiosas de grande valor simbólico e um órgão de tubos. Mais do que um espaço de oração, as igrejas são também um ponto de encontro dos habitantes. As festividades em honra do Divino Salvador e de Santa Luzia, por exemplo, continuam a trazer muita gente ao local.
Enquanto estive ali, por breves minutos,permiti-me esvaziar a mente. As pessoas cumprimentavam-se na rua, algumas cuidavam das suas hortas, e outras reuniam-se à porta da igreja, num ambiente de proximidade que, nas grandes cidades, raramente se encontra.
Navais is one of those little pearls that we so often ignore in the rush of everyday life. That brief stop served not only to slow down but also to get to know another place and understand a little bit about it. Our daily lives are always very busy with lots of things to do, to plan the next day. I often find myself on autopilot, to the point where I leave the house and am on my way to work or school and it's not the day for that. Or even not remember half of the path I've already walked. I really feel the need to be able to empty my mind for 5 minutes. The beach is my favorite place but discovering these small villages has increasingly been an escape that brings me something more. Often this little bit gives new energy to the day, a new disposition and things end up going better.

Navais é uma dessas pequenas pérolas que tantas vezes ignoramos na pressa do quotidiano. Aquela breve paragem serviu não só para abrandar como para conhecer mais um local e perceber um bocadinho do mesmo. A nossa vida do dia a dia é sempre muito apressada com muitas coisas para fazer, programar o dia seguinte. Muitas vezes dou por mim em piloto automático, ao ponto de sair de casa e estar a fazer o percurso para o trabalho ou para a escola e não ser dia para tal. Ou então nem me lembrar de metade do caminho que já percorri. Sinto muita necessidade de poder esvaziar a mente por 5 minutos. A praia é o meu local preferido mas descobrir estas pequenas vilas tem sido cada vez um escape que me trás algo mais. Muitas vezes este bocadinho dá um novo alento ao dia, uma nova disposição e as coisas acabam por correr melhor.
