Singapore schools online learning to start as coronavirus cases rise

18 September (Reuters) - The education government announced on Saturday that Singapore's primary schools will switch to home-based learning for ten days before of a critical national assessment, after the country reported 935 new COVID-19 cases the day before, the largest number since April last year.

From September 27 to October 6, kids in grades 1 to 5 will be taught at home. To limit the risk of school-based transmissions and the number of pupils placed in quarantine, Primary 6 students will have a study vacation for a few days beginning September 25 before appearing for the national examination.

"As the PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) written paper examinations approach, we will take additional precautions to protect pupils who are not yet medically eligible for vaccination and provide more peace of mind to parents and students," said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing.

Singapore has decided to take a break from further reopening due to an increase in cases following the easing of several COVID-19 safeguards. COVID-19 vaccination has been administered to more than 80% of the population.

In early 2022, the country plans to vaccinate children under the age of 12.
