These days I've really felt like playing some war game. I've always loved them, from the classic Commandos, which is more strategy focused, to Medal of Honor, which is a bit more immersive. At least something like that was what I was looking for.
In my Steam library I have several war games, but none of them caught my attention, so I decided to go with Sniper Elite 4. I gave it a lot of thought, since I barely remembered the early Sniper Elite games, and I thought maybe I should replay them, but in reality they don't share a continuous story, or at least that's what I read before starting it.
I thought the game was going to give me performance issues, but it ran smoothly, and honestly it doesn’t look bad at all for how old it is. I really like the aesthetic, except for the vegetation, I feel like it looks very rough and kind of pixelated. I guess I could improve the graphics a bit more, but I don’t really see the need.
I recorded a gameplay of a little over an hour, which is the format I really enjoy. I don’t like leaving chapters or campaigns halfway through, I prefer to play it safe and finish them. So if you at least have some time and can watch the beginning, that’s enough for me.
I chose to play on difficult thinking the experience would still be easy, but I ended up having a pretty rough time.
The game shows us that the Nazis are plotting something involving a revolutionary missile that obviously represents a major threat. Our objective is to investigate and assassinate several high-ranking officers. Pretty straightforward, really...
As I mentioned earlier, my gameplay is quite long, but I die many times, some because of my own stupidity, and others because I had no idea where I was being shot from. Even though I had a radar and literally wallhack, the game got extremely difficult. I'm not sure I did things all that well, since I started off cautiously and stealthy, but later I began taking out everything in my path, making a lot of noise. That obviously alerted all the enemies, and every so often they ambushed me with rifles and machine guns.
I thought the shooting mechanics and the cinematic killcams would bore me, but sometimes it's really cool to watch the bullet’s path and how it hits the enemy’s vital organs. It's crazy how the bullet shatters a skull or explodes a Nazi’s heart.
Honestly, I think I’m going to play this game a lot, especially since you can level up and improve your weapons and skills, I like not having to use the same sniper rifle all the time. I also liked that it has this weird system where you can level up without finishing the campaign, which means you can upgrade stuff in your own playthrough. Though I’m not entirely sure how that works.
If I had to mention something negative that I noticed in the first few minutes: you can’t jump! Honestly, that feels like a mistake. We're in a war, any terrain or surface can be useful as cover, but that's not the case here. There are trucks with big enough spaces where we could hide from enemies, but the game simply doesn’t let you interact with them. You also can’t climb on many rooftops, even though the game does have a bit of parkour. I don’t know... it was just annoying wanting to jump over a wall and not being able to, when it’s clear that even I, without being a soldier, could jump it in real life.

Estos días he tenido muchas ganas de jugar algún juego de guerra. Siempre me han encantado, desde el clásico Commandos que es más de estrategia, hasta Medal of Honor que es un poco más inmersivo. Al menos algo así era lo que estaba buscando.
En mi biblioteca de Steam tengo varios juegos de guerra, pero ninguno me llamaba la atención, así que decidí ir por Sniper Elite 4. Le di bastantes vueltas, ya que de la saga Sniper Elite apenas recordaba los primeros y pensé que tal vez debía rejugarlos, pero en realidad no comparten una historia como tal, o al menos eso leí antes de empezarlo.
Pensé que el juego me iba a dar problemas de rendimiento, pero funcionó sin inconvenientes, la verdad no se ve nada mal para lo viejo que es. Me gusta mucho la estética que tiene, excepto por la maleza, siento que se ve muy rústica y algo pixelada. Supongo que podría mejorar un poco más los gráficos, pero tampoco lo veo necesario.
Grabé un gameplay de poco más de una hora, que es el formato que realmente me gusta. No me agrada dejar capítulos o campañas por la mitad, prefiero ir a lo seguro y terminarlos. Así que si por lo menos tienes algo de tiempo y puedes ver el principio, con eso me basta.
Elegí jugar en "difícil" pensando que aun así la experiencia sería sencilla, pero terminé complicándome bastante.
El juego nos muestra que los nazis traman algo con un misil revolucionario que obviamente representa una gran amenaza. Nuestro objetivo es investigar y asesinar a varios oficiales de alto mando. Bastante sencillo la verdad...
Como mencioné antes, mi gameplay es bastante largo, pero muero muchas veces: algunas por mi propia estupidez, y otras por no saber desde dónde me disparaban. A pesar de tener un radar y literalmente "wallhack", el juego se me complicó a un nivel exagerado. No estoy seguro de haber hecho las cosas tan bien, ya que decidí ir con cautela y sigilo al principio, pero luego empecé a eliminar todo lo que se cruzaba en mi camino haciendo mucho ruido. Eso obviamente alertó a todos los enemigos, y cada dos por tres me emboscaban con rifles y metralletas.
Pensé que la mecánica de disparo y la cinemática me parecerían aburridas, pero a veces es genial ver la trayectoria de la bala y cómo impacta en los órganos vitales del enemigo. Es una locura cómo se ve la bala atravesando el cráneo o explotando el corazón de un nazi.
La verdad es que sí creo que voy a jugarlo bastante, además de que puedes subir de rango y mejorar tus armas y habilidades, me gusta no usar el mismo sniper todo el tiempo. También me gustó que tiene un sistema raro en el que puedes subir de nivel sin pasar la campaña, lo que significa que puedes mejorar cosas en tu propia partida. Aunque no estoy del todo seguro de cómo funciona eso.
Si tuviera que mencionar algo negativo del juego que noté desde los primeros minutos: ¡no se puede saltar! Honestamente eso me parece un error. Estamos en una guerra, cualquier terreno o superficie puede servir como cobertura, pero no es así. Hay camiones con grandes espacios que podrían usarse para escondernos de los enemigos, pero el juego simplemente no te permite interactuar con ellos. Tampoco puedes subirte a muchos techos, y eso que el juego tiene un poco de parkour. No sé... simplemente me resultó molesto querer saltar un muro y que no se pueda, cuando a simple vista hasta yo mismo sin ser soldado podría hacerlo en la vida real.
