This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase any card from the Dragon Splinter, but I couldn't just pick one so I've opted for TWO excellent budget choices which I think should form part of anyone's line up if yer playing in Bronze league...

NB - I've rented out my 'adult deck' and abandoned Diamond and Champs for now, and am currently playing via my alt account @self-track - experimenting with building a budget deck down in the Bronze Leagues.

I've been using Peakmonsters to rent, it works pretty well!

In the bronze leagues you usually have ALL six splinters available for every battle, so having a decent dragon splinter is a really good option given that you can play and enhance any other splinter with dragon monsters.

For the best dragon monsters you really want the legendary cards, but these are expensive, however there are some good budget options out there....

Two Budget Dragon cards which are EXCELLENT in Bronze league IMO are:

  • The legendary black dragon (pictured above) - which I picked up for 14 DEC a day - for 6 mana you get 2 magic damage, flying (everyone plays sneak down here, so that's useful!) and life-leach.

  • The rare Manticore - 0.1 DEC - AN ABSOLUTE NO BRAINER for second tank! Possibly the best value rental out there!

The battle below features these three cards played with some others and illustrates a useful defence strategy against the ubiquitous Sand Worm attacks that afflict Bronze league.

Also, spot the MISTAKE I MADE if you can, I won't point it out, I didn't even realise until I replayed the battle!

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana cap 28
  • Standard Game Play (Bronze!)

Summoner - Darla (1.4 DEC)

  1. Onyx Sentinel (0.6 DEC) About 10 times cheaper than Lord A and nearly as effective!
  2. The Manticore (0.1 DEC) - excellent health and damage if combined with Darla
  3. Wood Nymph (0.1 DEC) for tank heal, useful!
  4. Fiendish Harpy (9 DEC) Opportunity 1
  5. Screeching Vulture (0.1 DEC) - opportunity 2
  6. Black Dragon - decent magic damage, flying for some defence against sneak and life leach

Battle Analysis Did my strategy work?

Yes! To see it in action click here!

  • Round 1 - We exchange blows - TWO misses on the Black Dragon thanks to flying, it's going to take me a while to plough through that Undead Rex, BUT the same for my opponent - NB 6 health with shield against melee and ranged = 12 health in reality!
  • Round 2 - I've worked through his duff cards with my Opportunity attack but the Rex still stands, just at the end of round 2, I lose my Dragon at the back!
  • Round 3 - I take out his Rex (finally) and his Spider, but I lose my Vulture!
  • Round 4 - I take out his Skeleton, by now in the front row.
  • Rounds 5-7 - it takes a while to take out his only remaining card with just two attacks (what by now i'd realised should have been three!) but I get there, he fails to get through the combination of shield and heal, even with 5 damage.

Battle Analysis - Why Victory?

The Black Dragon was absolutely crucial in the backline - flying elicited two misses from the Sneak Monsters, especially useful against Sand Worm. NB the Diamond Dragon may be an option here too - it has 10 Shields and decent health, but it does cost 10 mana!

The Sentinel's Shield ability was crucial to him holding out at the front - that's a decent substitute for Lord A for the money for sure!

Shield and Heal worked well agains the melee attacks.

I would have been weak against magic, however!

NB - not the only good budget dragon cards!

Besides the above I especially recommend The Fire Spitter - low mana and decent damage, and flying again of course!

I'm also contemplating renting the 5 magic summoner dude, that could be a good magic-attack option combined with some water cards!

NB I changed my valuation in the title to reflect the error I made with one of my card selections - the card I thought would do something but in fact did nothing, so it could have been ANYTHING, hence I didn't' factor its value in!

If you don't yet play Splinterlands, why not give it a go?
