Those who know me offline already know that I have a lot of... indecision when it comes to pursuing a career or educational path. With that being said, I do know that there has always been something that I have truly enjoyed doing and would love to use as an intermediary job before really pursuing a career or graduate degree here in America; teaching English to international students.

Back in college I spent a few months teaching 5th graders through one of my courses. Though the kids were pretty nice, I realized that I cannot handle the energy level of 10 year olds in a classroom of any kind. However, that same set of courses led me to a course titled "Teaching English Internationally" and made me realize that people of all ages are in need of a teacher.

I'm 22 years old and I realized that the only thing I truly had a mastery of at this point in my life is the language that I have been speaking since I was born: English.

I did not realize the depth of demand for English tutoring around the world. Though there is a ton of need in the earlier age groups trying to learn the language, there is also a ton of demand for students coming to the United States, England or Australia to study who have a solid basis in English, but lack some understanding of the more difficult or academic language in English.

While I was abroad in Australia, I was able to fill in teaching a course for 25-35 year old MBA students looking to get a little extra assistance with English regarding more complex business terms. The students were there not because they were required to be or because it would impress someone, but because they genuinely needed the help to excel in their field. They were interested, passionate and curious about the language; this is the kind of teaching I think I would really enjoy.

I started to do some research into teaching English around different parts of the world and was absolutely shocked by the results that I found. Of course there is private tutoring, but that can be sporadic in demand. English teaching at international schools however... That seems like a goldmine.

Check out this article by Go Overseas to see just how high that demand really is.

In places like the UAE or Japan, English teachers at international high schools or undergraduate level universities are bringing in anywhere between $2200- $5500 a month! I know that is a wide range, but even just looking at averages it is a pretty good deal for an entry level position, plus many of these programs provide housing, meals and transportation for their teachers.

Most of these programs require you to have a bachelor's degree (in anything) and a TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and then you are ready to go. Many require you to be a native speaker, but many do not require that.

If you are in a strange in between moment in life like I am, maybe give a little thought into teaching your native language to people around the world. I think that no matter what language you are speaking there will be someone out there looking for someone to help them learn or master that language. I'll be taking my TEFL certification over the next few weeks, I'll update you all if anything comes together for me in terms of finding students to teach!
