Hollywood had a magical run. For the past 100+ years, it was the center of our entertainment world. It helped to put California on the map and spawned the careers of thousands of household names.

As they say, nothing lasts forever. There is a new game coming to town and it does not appear the movie studios are taking notice. This is going to be fatal.

We live in a world where people are always vying for our attention. This is what the entertainment world is. There are only so many discretionary dollars (or whatever unit of currency) to go around. Historically, Hollywood did very well in getting its share.

The Metaverse

This is a dynamic arena that is going to change everything. We will see the emergence of platforms related to this that are going to change work, socialization, communication, and, yes, entertainment.

Companies that see the future are already starting to take action. This is not going to be a repeat of the early days of the Internet where if you were a couple years late in setting up your website, no big deal. Instead, being a few years behind will be fatal.

To get an idea about what the Metaverse is, check out what is the Metaverse and how we can prepare.

Ultimately, we are going to be looking at a multi-dimensional world. It will no longer be static 2D interaction. Instead, we are going to see it moved to 3D along with, eventually, full immersion which will stimulate many of our sense at the same time.

Notice how this is not Hollywood. In fact, it also takes out broadcast television. Our entire media system is going to be under attack. But from whom is the question?

Before answering that, we need to realize we still are in the primitive stages of the Internet. This is a technology medium that we really have not started to utilize to any great degree. What we did so far is child's play compared to what is coming. This technology is capable of so much more and we are just starting to uncover what it can do.

This means all of society is about to change. Almost every industry will be affected to some degree, with a few being completely upended. In spite of this, we already saw the demise of a number of industries like long-distance phone service as well as many companies that simply did not adapt.

What is different this time is the next stage is on steroids compared to the last. It will obliterate a lot more in a much quicker period of time.

Experiential Internet

Going forward, it is all going to be about experience. As the technology increases in capability, we are going to shift from passive to active involvement. The Internet went from information to communication. This was a big step. However, the next phase is going to allow us to share experiences with different people.

Hollywood still is a passive industry. It creates content that entertains. Even the most successful ventures are passive experiences. We watch a film, no matter how entertaining, and we are separate from it. In other words we are on the outside looking in.

Do you know an industry that is not that way? Is there something where activity is stressed over passive behavior?

There is one that is likely to step up as a driving force in the Metaverse. That industry is gaming.

We are rapidly getting to the point where gaming companies can provide most of what Hollywood offers, and then some. Gaming is at the forefront of Virtual Reality, already looking to incorporate it in. This is going to take the experience from 2D to 3D.

At the same time, gaming immerses us in the action. Instead of watching a war or space exploration film, we can be a part of it. The game is designed where we impact the activity as opposed to the script being written for us. In the future, expect the opportunity to be involved in the game, even in a passive capacity. What this means is we can view the activity taking place but as an immersed observer.

Gaming can expand to into so much more. It is likely they will be the major media companies of the future. They are already in the process of establishing platforms that will allow for the integration of more entertainment mediums as the technology grows.

Here is where we are going to see a massive upsetting of the entire television and film industry. It is something that is hard to visualize at the moment but then again, how many saw the demise of Blockbuster and Kodak in the manner they went down?

In the end, it is far easier for gaming companies to develop the advanced graphics and story lines than it is for Hollywood to adopt an interactive model. The forward progress simply is ill-suited for them.

Ultimately, the further we move towards the Metaverse, the closer the end for Hollywood.
