There are a few of these HD remakes available, all make use of the Mesen emulator. The Metroid HD release is, to me, arguably more impressive than the Legend of Zelda Remastered release. Not only are graphics and audio improved but there is parallax scrolling added giving Metroid a bit of much needed depth.
What bit would you say this is? 12-Bit? I am not sure but it is still amazingly awesome looking. Metroid was one of those titles I would borrow from friends but could never really get far in over a weekend. I simply did not understand the necessity of backtracking and redoing sections with new powerups. It was so “against” what Super Mario Bros taught us.
Graphically, this is simply amazing. From the status screen to the little details in the levels – flora and such in the foreground, just because. Parallax scrolling adds so much depth making the areas feel even bigger than the originals simple black backgrounds ever did.
I believe all these remasters, HD updates, etc for Nintendo Entertainment System games are powered by the Mesen emulator. I do not have any experience with it. There is an extensive amount of information on setting up Metroid HD over on ROMHacking.net.
Just be prepared to do some trial and error to get this working perfectly. Anyone that has worked with hacks knows that is part of the “fun” of these things.
I hear there is a Castlevania 1 release in this style. I wonder if there are more? As I learn about them, I will update you here on Hive about them as well. I personally love seeing these types of updates as they give new life to the classics.
What game would you like to see redone in this style? Let me know in the comments.
