¿Qué pasaría si atropellaras a una aparente criatura mágica en el camino durante el trayecto hacia una reunión de trabajo en un lugar alejado? Muchas personas sentirían curiosidad, o algo de empatía por lo ocurrido, pero en esta historia, lo extremista se sirve muy a menudo. La película a reseñar cuenta una de las tramas más absurdas, pero posiblemente creíbles en un mundo donde las ambiciones combinadas con deseo de progreso se juntan.
Una historia satírica, exagerada y con un humor muy negro, donde la idiotez humana domina los espacios, haciéndolo entretenido y chasqueable para el espectador. Con una secuencia bastante definida, servimos en esta ocasión, una extraña comedia negra con elementos fantásticos y de terror.

Death of a Unicorn es una comedia oscura de terror escrita y dirigida por Alex Scharfman y protagonizada por Paul Rudd y Jenna Ortega, junto a ellos en el elenco se encuentran Will Poulter, Tea Leoni y Richard E. Grant. La película fue estrenada el 28 de marzo de este año en Estados Unidos y fue producida y distribuida por la A24, teniendo a Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) como productor, junto con las empresas Monoceros Media, Secret Engine, Square Peg, The Royal Budapest Film Co. y Ley Line Entertainment, con un presupuesto de 15 millones de dólares, la película recaudó un total de $16.099.508.
Un padre (Elliot) y su hija (Ridley), emprenden un viaje hacia la casa de campo de una familia adinerada con la que Elliot cerrará uno de los mejores tratos de su carrera como abogado. Es una oportunidad grande para él, ya que dicha familia es una de las más grandes dentro de la industria farmacéutica, pero en el camino, una criatura parecida a un caballo, se atraviesa en medio de la carretera y Elliot termina atropellándola.
Asustados, Elliot y Ridley piensan que hacer y se dan cuenta de que la criatura posee una protuberancia en su frente parecida a un cuerno. Intrigada, Ridley toca el cuerno y ve cosas maravillosas a través de él; como si estuviera navegando en el espacio exterior. En ese momento, Elliot decide apaciguar a la criatura de una manera… muy abrupta, y deciden llevársela con ellos a la casa de aquella familia.
Los nervios de Ridley y la ansiedad de Elliot comienzan a delatarlos, luego se dan cuenta de que la criatura, que en realidad es un unicornio, se levanta e intenta huir, pero uno de los sirvientes de la casa la apacigua con un disparo. Mientras la analizan, se dan cuenta que la sangre del unicornio tiene dotes curativos, y deciden usarlo para crear un medicamento que revolucionará la medicina, pero las cosas se salen de control cuando se dan cuenta que el unicornio no está solo y que sus familiares buscarán una sanguinaria venganza.
Como sátira que quiere representar la ambición sin límites del ser humano de una manera muy humorística, me parece que está bien, aunque demasiado exagerado. Más que ser chistoso, la película parece que toma una dirección de concientización animalista sobre los peligros de usar a la naturaleza para el bien de la humanidad; si bien, es bastante acertado, la manera en como lo toma la trama es insólito. Todo esto que digo, suena como una propaganda de izquierda, pero no puedo evitar pensar que es así al analizar los elementos de la trama.
La familia: Los Leopold, representan a la ambición de la nobleza que vive en un castillo, y que quieren usar el poder del unicornio para su beneficio y el de toda la humanidad. Por supuesto, existe un interés monetario, pero todos los descubrimientos científicos son así, o por lo menos en su mayoría.
La contraparte de todo esto sería Ridley, ella sería como el extremo protestante que solo quiere proteger a la naturaleza de ser modificada, destruida o alterada por las garras del hombre, cosa que podemos ver en la características de este personaje: una chica con pensamientos progres, que está en contra de las industrias, el capitalismo, está a favor del feminismo, y aparte de eso, fuma cigarrillos electrónicos; parece que le colocaron todos los estereotipos que existen de este tipo de personas.
Elliot, el padre de Ridley, se encuentra en el lado de sus intereses, pero a la vez está entre la espada y la pared; si de aprovechar una gran oportunidad o de las inquietudes de su hija. En este punto, la película se vuelve cada vez más absurda e irónica, donde el humor yace en la codicia y la traición, la sed de poder y otros tantos elementos intrínsecos dentro de la naturaleza humana.
Sin bien, los personajes estuvieron bien desarrollados dentro de lo que es el arco argumental de la trama, algunas actuaciones están ahí pendiendo de un hilo, por ejemplo; Jenna Ortega no me parece una buena actriz, me parece que deja mucho que desear en este papel, aunque haya personas que piensen lo contrario, la verdad es, que para mí no estuvo nada fuera de lo común. Los demás actores me parecieron que estuvieron más a la altura de su nivel, y aunque su personaje pretendía ser la voz de la razón, aún tenía características que se pudieron llevar más allá dejándola memorable.
Death of a unicorn te deja con las expectativas cayéndose a un barranco. Todo parece una propaganda progre de izquierda sobre la ambición humana y las consecuencias de aprovecharse de la naturaleza sin su consentimiento. Una película con bastante sátira, con sus momentos de tensión; muy buenos, debo reconocer, pero con una ausente solidez en su historia traspasando todos los límites. La mezcla entre fantasía, terror y humor, va algo desequilibrada, dándonos los momentos más absurdos a lo largo del film. A pesar de todo, me pareció entretenida, aunque no me enganchó como esperaba.

What would happen if you ran over an apparent magical creature on the road to a business meeting in a remote location? Many people would be curious or empathize with what happened, but in this story, the extreme is often served up. The film to be reviewed tells one of the most absurd, but possibly believable plots in a world where ambitions combined with a desire for progress come together.
A satirical story, exaggerated and with a very black humor, where human idiocy dominates the spaces, making it entertaining and clickable for the viewer. With a well-defined sequence, we serve on this occasion, a strange black comedy with fantastic and horror elements.

It's a big opportunity for him, as the family is one of the biggest in the pharmaceutical industry, but on the way, a horse-like creature crosses the road, and Elliot ends up running over it.
Frightened, Elliot and Ridley figure out what to do and realize that the creature has a horn-like protrusion on its forehead. Intrigued, Ridley touches the horn and sees wondrous things through it, as if he were sailing in outer space. At that moment, Elliot decides to appease the creature in a... very abrupt way, and they decide to take it with them to that family's house.
Ridley's nerves and Elliot's anxiety start to give them away, then they realize that the creature, which is a unicorn, gets up and tries to run away, but one of the servants of the house pacifies it with a shot. While analyzing it, they realize that the unicorn's blood has healing powers, and decide to use it to create a medicine that will revolutionize medicine, but things get out of control when they realize that the unicorn is not alone and that its relatives will seek bloody revenge.
As a satire that wants to represent the limitless ambition of human beings in a very humorous way, I think it's okay, although too exaggerated. More than being funny, the film seems to take a direction of animalistic awareness about the dangers of using nature for the good of mankind; although, it is quite accurate, the way the plot takes it is unusual. All of this sounds like leftist propaganda, but I can't help but think it's so when analyzing the plot elements.
The family: The Leopolds represent the ambition of the nobility who live in a castle, and who want to use the power of the unicorn for their benefit and that of all mankind. Of course, there is a monetary interest, but all scientific discoveries are like that, or at least most of them.
The counterpart of all this would be Ridley, she would be like the extreme protestant who only wants to protect nature from being modified, destroyed or altered by the claws of man, which we can see in the characteristics of this character: a girl with progressive thoughts, who is against industries, capitalism, is in favor of feminism, and apart from that, she smokes electronic cigarettes; it seems that they placed all the stereotypes that exist of this type of people.
Elliot, Ridley's father, is on the side of her interests, but at the same time, he is between a rock and a hard place; whether to take advantage of a great opportunity or his daughter's concerns. At this point, the film becomes increasingly absurd and ironic, where the humor lies in greed and betrayal, the thirst for power, and so many other elements intrinsic to human nature.
Although the characters were well developed within the plot, some performances are hanging by a thread, for example; Jenna Ortega does not seem to me a good actress, I think she leaves much to be desired in this role, although there are people who think otherwise, the truth is, for me she was nothing out of the ordinary. The other actors seemed to me to be more up to her level, and although her character was intended to be the voice of reason, she still had characteristics that could have been taken further, leaving her memorable.
Death of a unicorn leaves you with your expectations falling off a cliff. It all seems like leftist progressive propaganda about human ambition and the consequences of taking advantage of nature without its consent. A film with a lot of satire, with its moments of tension; very good, I must admit, but with an absent solidity in its story that goes beyond all limits. The mixture of fantasy, horror, and humor is somewhat unbalanced, giving us the most absurd moments throughout the film. Despite everything, I found it entertaining, although it didn't hook me as I expected.
