"No apto para sensibles" es lo primero que puedo decir sobre esta película, que ya está en mi Top de películas de Terror, aunque no diría que es del todo de terror, es de muchas cosas a la vez, con una historia que creo que con otros estilo de dirección hubiese sido aún mucho más oscura, así que dentro de todo lo perturbadora que fue creo que pudo haber sido muchísimo peor.
Sus directores Danny Philippou y Michael Philippou, ya los conocía de Háblame o Talk To Me, que al igual que esta película siento que pudo ser más de terror. Pero ya puedo saber de estos directores que les gustan los proyectos que tengan una buena historia de terror, y que la elevan con buenos maquillajes, algunos efectos y secuencias algo larga, para hacernos tener esa experiencia de terror que buscamos los amantes de este género.
"Not suitable for the faint of heart" is the first thing I can say about this film, which is already in my Top Horror Movies. Although I wouldn't say it's entirely horror, it's many things at once, with a story that I think would have been even darker with another directing style. So, despite its disturbing nature, I think it could have been much worse.
I already knew its directors, Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, from Talk to Me, which, like this film, I feel could have been more of a horror film. But I can already tell from these directors that they like projects with a good horror story, and that they elevate it with good makeup, some effects, and somewhat lengthy sequences, to give us that horror experience that fans of this genre seek.
Sinopsis
En Australia, Andy (Billy Brarrat) y su hermanastra Piper (Sora Wong) que tiene discapacidad visual, pierden a su padre mientras éste se duchaba, y que había atravesado un procesos de quimioterapia. Por esta razón, quedan en un hogar sustituto mientras Andy de 17 años cumple la mayoría de edad y podrá entonces hacerse tutor legal de Piper.
Conoceremos a Laura (Sally Hawkins) quien los recibe en su casa, y vive junto a un niño muy extraño que llama Olli (Jonah Wren Phillips) que dice que tiene problemas para hablar.
En esta casa pasan cosas muy turbias, debido a los problemas que tiene Laura por la pérdida de su hija Cathy, que la hará hacer lo impensable para tenerla de nuevo, recurriendo a prácticas malignas y sangrientas.
Synopsis
In Australia, Andy (Billy Brarrat) and his visually impaired stepsister Piper (Sora Wong) lose their father while he was showering. He had undergone chemotherapy. As a result, they remain in foster care until Andy, 17, comes of age and can become Piper's legal guardian.
We meet Laura (Sally Hawkins), who welcomes them into her home and lives with a very strange boy named Olli (Jonah Wren Phillips), who claims to have speech problems.
Very shady things happen in this house due to Laura's problems with the loss of her daughter Cathy, which will lead her to do the unthinkable to win her back, resorting to evil and bloody practices.
Por lo que les pude contar en la Sinopsis, pues hay un factor en común entre Andy, su hermanastra Piper y Laura, y es el "Duelo" pues los chicos perdieron a su padre y Laura a su hija, y todos están lidiando el problema de no poder gestionar sus emociones ante esto.
El dolor ante la pérdida puede consumirnos y llevarnos a lugares oscuros, no importa la edad que tengamos. Lamentablemente, hay personas que quedan más vulnerables ante este dolor y otras como el caso de Laura, son capaces de recurrir a medios inmorales e ilegales para escuchar de nuevo la voz de sus seres queridos. Recuerdo que en la anterior película "Talk To Me" de estos directores, también el duelo era el tema de fondo.
From what I could tell you in the synopsis, there's a common thread between Andy, his stepsister Piper, and Laura, and that's "Grief." The boys lost their father, and Laura lost her daughter. They're all dealing with the problem of not being able to manage their emotions in the face of this.
The pain of loss can consume us and take us to dark places, no matter how old we are. Unfortunately, some people are more vulnerable to this pain, and others, like Laura, are capable of resorting to immoral and illegal means to hear their loved ones again. I remember that in the directors' previous film, "Talk to Me," grief was also the underlying theme.
Los directores en esta película me han hecho tapar la pantalla del televisor con mi mano en más de una ocasión, con secuencias algo largas y difíciles de sostener, en este sentido se nota un crecimiento en el manejo de estas escenas.
El factor sobrenatural, también está presente ya que Laura está tratando de recrear una práctica o ritual maligno sobre como hacer una transferencia del alma de su hija a otro cuerpo, y esto tiene un proceso muy fuerte y difícil de ver, con efectos básicamente de maquillaje y de una gran dirección de actuación, sobre todo la del niño que interpreta a Olli, que fue excelente a pesar de ser tan joven.
The directors of this film made me cover the TV screen with my hand on more than one occasion, with sequences that were somewhat long and difficult to hold. In this sense, there's a noticeable growth in the way they handled these scenes.
The supernatural element is also present, as Laura is trying to recreate an evil practice or ritual involving the transfer of her daughter's soul into another body. This process is very intense and difficult to watch, with primarily makeup effects and excellent acting, especially that of the child who plays Olli, who was excellent despite being so young.
El desenlace o el final de la película fue muy aleccionador y reflexivo, aunque hubo una pérdida que lamenté mucho, pensándolo bien mientras escribía este post, pienso que realmente estuvo bien, ya que no terminó tan cursi como para decir que hubo un final feliz.
El cine de terror nos entrega esta película donde tenemos la oportunidad de hablar un tema tan importante como el duelo y la aceptación, y no solo entregarnos sustos sin sentido.

The ending of the film was very instructive and thoughtful. Although there was a loss that I deeply regretted, reflecting on it while writing this post, I think it was actually quite good, as it wasn't so cheesy that it seemed like a happy ending.
Horror cinema offers us this film where we have the opportunity to discuss the important topic of grief and acceptance, rather than just give us pointless scares.

En el mejor estilo de estos directores, escenas claras y paletas de colores hermosas. No me gustan las películas de terror donde todo es oscuro y no se puede ver en detalle todo, pero todo se ve muy bien, con buena iluminación, excelentes encuadres de cámara, acercamientos a detalles, alejamientos interesantes con tomas desde alturas, etc.

Las actuaciones, tanto de Laura con su actriz que ya conocía de la película La Forma del Agua, los jóvenes e incluso el niño, tuvieron actuaciones muy buenas.

I don't like horror movies where everything is dark and you can't see every detail, but everything looks great, with good lighting, excellent camera framing, close-ups of details, interesting zoom-outs with shots from above, etc.

El procedimiento, ritual o ese proceso de transferencia del alma de la hija de Laura, no se explica. No sabemos si pertenece a alguna religión o culto de algún país, no lo explican, solo vemos que ella sigue este proceso documentado en cintas. Realmente no es que haya sido un hueco en la trama, parece que no era lo importante para los directores, pero a veces si nos dejan saber que es magia negra, vudoo, etc. pero en esta película no queda claro.

Escenas bruscamente cortadas para pasar a otra. Como cuando hay un desastre en la casa, y Laura arregla todo de repente, y detalles así que creo debieron verse menos arreglados de la nada.

The procedure, ritual, or process of transferring Laura's daughter's soul isn't explained. We don't know if she belongs to a religion or cult from a particular country; they don't explain it; we just see her following this process documented on tape. It's not really a plot hole; it seems like it wasn't important to the directors, but sometimes they let us know that it's black magic, voodoo, etc., but in this film, it's not clear.

Scenes abruptly cut to another. Like when there's a disaster in the house, and Laura suddenly fixes everything, and details like that that I think should have looked less neat out of nowhere.

Maybe the film takes a long time to develop; at first, it didn't seem like it was going to be as powerful as it turned out to be, but this was a surprise factor that surprised me, since I didn't know much about what the film was about, and seeing it suddenly escalate was abrupt.
La Recomiendo al 100% si eres amante del género de terror, en caso de ser sensible es mejor que no la veas, ya que hay escenas fuertes y muy, muy difíciles de ver.
Creo que el trabajo de estos directores los voy a seguir y estoy segura que en cada entrega será mucho mejor que la anterior, porque así lo estoy apreciando.
I 100% recommend it if you're a fan of the horror genre. If you're sensitive, it's best not to watch it, as there are some powerful scenes that are very, very difficult to watch.
I think I'll be following these directors' work, and I'm sure each installment will be much better than the last, because that's how I appreciate it.
